BIL'IN STUDENTS FUND

Students of Bil'in ask for your help as they look forward to the upcoming semester at their university. The local youth are very committed to their education despite the hardships that they face from Israel's occupation and violence. Please consider their situation as every young adult should have the opportunity for education. The small Palestinian village of Bil'in is home to nearly 1,800 people. Situated in the valleys and hillsides between Jerusalem and Jaffa, the local people have suffered from a range of social and economic problems as a result of land disputes between the locals and the Israeli occupation. Its policies ensuing land confiscation have resulted in home and crops destruction, terrorizing citizens, carrying out acts of intimidation, violence and other subversive actions. Even after the residents won back half of the land in 2005, years after the high court named these actions as unlawful, a thousand uprooted olive trees, demolished homes, torn families, loss of jobs, and hope was not restored. The land battles left citizens at a loss and they have been struggling to rebuild ever since. Both the land and people are left with scars, even with the massive efforts of locals, much work needs to be done. It's no secret that the youth of Bil'in are keen and curious of their surroundings, many, especially girls, thrive in academic settings. Unfortunately, since many families relied on the uprooted olive trees to make oil and many other popular local products; they can no longer afford to send their children to school. There are many exceptional universities in neighboring towns and cities where privileged boys and girls are able to take on studies of their choosing, popular subjects include engineering, business, psychology, and teaching. A semester at one of these schools cost $1600; they receive little to nothing from the government and are forced to rely on their family's financial situation. The local youth have a strong desire to return to the village to become active members in the community and be with their families. Our organization believes that these tuition costs are small investment for the promises of higher education and wishes to help these individuals reach their goals and build the futures they didn't know was possible.
